On May 11th, 1985 I drove to Bellingham, and entered a 3.5 mile fun run. My Sister and two nieces waited for me at the finish line. I had a lot of fun participating in this Fun Run. When I started the race, I thought I had no chance of winning it. I was confident that there would be at least one runner that could average 5:30 pace per mile (or faster). This would allow me (I thought) to run my own pace and "just have fun". I told my Sister that I was going to try to average 6:00 mile pace. My Brother-in-law was a 2 miler in High School and College, and he is one of those people who could average well below 6 minute mile pace for this event. As it turned out, he was not in this fun run, and I was able to win it! I think my Sister Nancy was as surprised as I was about the win. It was not a large race, but it was cool to win a fun run. And I enjoyed talking to some of the event organizers after the race.
I later considered the ribbon I won to be my "lucky blue ribbon"; and I considered the fun run T shirt to be my "lucky T shirt".
