“Land of Lincoln”

I (Wayne) first visited the state of Illinois during the Spring of 1974, when I was a Senior in High School.  I visited a college in Elsah, Illinois.  I decided to attend college there for two years, starting in the Fall of 1974.  The campus was in a rural setting.  I didn’t have a car on campus, so it was a treat when I got to go off campus:  Once in a while I was invited to go to St. Louis (e.g. to see a Cardinals baseball or football game), which was an hour drive away (see Note 1).  I remember taking an occasional study break to get blueberry pancakes at the Village Inn Pancake House in Alton. Additionally, I was on the college football team, so I got to visit other colleges when we had “away” games.  On one of those bus rides, we stopped at a park that had information about one of the Lincoln/Douglas debates…
